Learn How to Pray The Pater Noster – Latin Our Father
Do you know the Pater Noster (the Our Father in Latin)?
Our Lord himself taught us the beautiful Our Father prayer. It’s such a spiritually enriching prayer that it would take us years to mediate on each line.
St. Therese of Lisieux said:
“Sometimes when I am in such a state of spiritual dryness that not a single good thought occurs to me, I say very slowly the ‘Our Father,’ or the ‘Hail Mary,’ and these prayers suffice to take me out of myself, and wonderfully refresh me.”
St. Therese
The Our Father teaches is that indeed, the Creator of the Universe is Our Father, and that Christ is our brother.
St. John Chrysostom says:
”He who calls God, Father, confesses through this sole appellation, deliverance from sins and retraction of hell and righteοusness and sanctification and redemption and adoption and heritage and brotherhood to the Only Begotten Son, as well as to the granting of the Holy Spirit.”
St. John Chrysostom, Treatise to Matthew, homily 19, Greek Fathers of the Church, vol. IX, ρ. 668
The Our Father Prayer teaches us that we can go to our heavenly Father for all our needs. God knows the things we need without us having to ask him, but he wills that we pray so that we can draw closer to him, and to learn to depend on him.
Why Pray the Pater Noster
Of course, we pray the Our father in English or whatever language we speak. However, there is something about praying the Our Father prayer in Latin.

The Pater Noster – Latin Our Father Prayer
Pater Noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum.
Adveniat regnum tuum.
Fiat voluntas tua,
sicut in caelo et in terra.
Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie,
et dimitte nobis debita nostra
sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris.
Et ne nos inducas in tentationem, sed libera nos a malo.
Amen.

The Our Father Prayer
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done
on earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
Amen.
